Saturday, June 7, 2008
34-year-old Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual has won her fortieth title! Playing alongside her fellow countrywoman, 25-year-old Anabel Medina Garrigues, she claimed the women's doubles against the Italian-Australian pairing of Francesca Schiavone and Casey Dellacqua in three sets, 6-2 5-7 6-4.
Initially scheduled to be played on centre court, the final eventually took place in the early evening on the Suzanne Lenglen court. Virginia Ruano Pascual is a true doubles specialist who had already taken part in six finals between 2000 and 2005 at Roland Garros with the Argentinian Paola Suarez. Her love affair with the Parisian tournament continues with this her fifth women's doubles trophy.
First Grand Slam for Anabel
This was the tenth doubles title for Anabel Medina Garrigues, the young player from Valencia, and her first in a Grand Slam. Ranked No33 in the singles and No18 in the doubles, she has proven herself to be one of the best all-round players on the circuit.
Medina-Garrigues and Ruano-Pascual will head to the Olymics in Beijing high on confidence where they willl be representing their country in the doubles category. Spain can now dream of doing the double - the ball is in Nadal's court!
